Cullen J. Kotzian

Artist & Explorer

Some people could look at a mud puddle and see an ocean with ships.

Cullen Kotzian, the artist who refines the creations of Kasai, is an explorer of nature, beauty and the imagination which it inspires. He comes from a long line of explorers.  Both sets of his grandparents had the spirit to leave the familiar of their native land, cross the Atlantic, and explore a new life here in America.  This legacy of pursuing a dream; stepping out against the odds regardless of the potential outcome, has shaped how Cullen views life.  He looks with amazement at the rich texture, color, and subtle nuances which surround us every day.

The artwork of Kasai, is an extension of Cullen’s life story.   His loving parents, four younger sisters, and the unconditional love of numerous dogs have enriched and shaped his life.  His many self-taught skills were honed by a studio art degree from the University of Iowa, and strengthened in broader experiences while serving in The United States Air Force.  His life has had many twists and turns, both good and bad.  Despite the many dark spaces, the light always comes, and hope remains.

This enduring idea of hope and the pursuit to see beauty in what can often be overlooked, is why Cullen continues to explore, why he continues to create. Cullen’s work challenges all who interact with the natural, to view it with a renewed sense of imagination and awe, that only nature can inspire.
